Toby Keith, a well-known country artist who was known for chart-topping songs such as “Red Solo Cup” and “Should Have Been a Cowboy,” has gone away at the age of 62. In a statement that was published on X (which was previously known as Twitter), the singer-songwriter’s family revealed that he passed away in a calm and serene manner on Monday evening. Having been diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2022, Toby Keith has been fighting the disease ever since.

The statement sent by the family said, “Toby Keith passed away peacefully last night on February 5 while he was surrounded by his family.” It was with dignity and bravery that he fought his battle. A plea for privacy was included at the end of the communication, which was sent during this trying time.

Along the People’s Choice Country Awards, which took place in September 2023, Keith discussed his battle with cancer and described it as a roller coaster-like experience that was full of ups and downs along his journey. The following is what he had to say about it in an interview with E! News: “You get good days and, you know, you’re up and down, up and down.” Even though it’s usually zero to sixty and sixty to zero, I’m feeling really good today. For the occasion, he was joined by Tricia Lucus, his wife of almost four decades, who was also there.

Following the announcement of his cancer diagnosis, Keith made a heartfelt return to the stage in December 2023 at Park MGM in Las Vegas, where he headlined his first official gigs since the news of his illness. “It’ll be my first two shows,” he said in a video that was uploaded to YouTube to announce the scheduled performances. To put the band back in rhythm and to get me flowing again, these gigs are akin to rehabilitation sessions. The first time in my whole life that I have been absent for more than two years. Throughout my whole life, I have never missed a single year of work.

Keith was able to preserve his perseverance in spite of the difficulties he faced at the hands of both COVID and cancer. It was George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump who were among the presidents of the United States that he performed for. The year 2021 was the year that President Trump bestowed upon him the National Medal of Arts.

The last post that Keith made on Instagram was a video of himself singing, and the message that accompanied it read, “And that’s a wrap on the weekend, y’all.” Let’s go back to work.
