One time, I was on a plane and saw a new grandmother calm a crying infant in a smooth and speedy manner. While they were in the middle of the flight, the baby that she was holding began to wail. Immediately after a series of piercing shrieks, Grandma grabbed her lunatic buddy and started the ceremony that grownups all across the globe have been doing since the beginning of time!

She pressed the girl’s stomach on her shoulder while rocking the girl’s body from side to side, tapping on her bottom repeatedly, and making a steady “sh-sh-sh” noise in the girl’s ear. She did all of this while keeping the girl’s stomach against her shoulder. Within the span of less than a minute, her small, tiny ball fell asleep.

There is a strong temptation to assume that a person who is able to soothe children have a “talent.” It is not necessary to possess any special abilities in order to calm newborns; rather, it is necessary to have an understanding of a fundamental but absolutely counterintuitive reality about infants, which is that they are all born three months earlier than expected. I will elaborate. People are quite immature when they are born. Young horses are expected to be able to walk and even run on their very first day of birth. Contrarily, even the act of burping need our aid when it comes to our babies.

It is important to think of the first three months of pregnancy as a simulated fourth trimester and as an extension of the life of the fetus. Therefore, when it comes to taking care of children, we need to model our actions like the womb, which is a confined environment that is packed with quivering movements and is noisier than a vacuum cleaner.

A significant number of grandparents who lack expertise have a natural tendency to rock and embrace their baby grandkids who are crying. This is effective due to the fact that the soothing reflex, which function as a built-in “switch” for sobbing, may be triggered by these sensations!
