It is still unknown when Mavis was diagnosed with dementia; this is yet to be determined.
The fact that Jay Leno’s wife, Mavis Elizabeth Leno, is suffering from dementia has prompted him to submit a conservatorship petition on her behalf.
According to court records that ET was able to get, the late-night television icon submitted the petition on Friday in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. In the petition, he asked the judge to appoint him as the conservator so that he may organize her living trust and other estate preparations. According to the paperwork filed with the court, Leno “wants to create a trust to hold each of his and Mavis’s one-half interest in their community property, in order to ensure that Mavis has managed assets sufficient to provide for her care” in the event that he passes away before she does.
The petition makes clear that “Mavis has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years” while also stating “Jay is fully capable of continuing support for Mavis’ physical and financial needs, as he has throughout their marriage,” even though her “current condition renders her incapable of executing the estate plan.” According to the lawsuit, Mavis, who was 77 years old at the time, was receiving treatment for “dementia and mood disorder.”
A doctor’s report dated November, which is attached to the petition, claims that Mavis has suffered with impairments to her memory, capacity to focus, and use of reason. It is unknown when Mavis, the comedian’s wife of 43 years, was diagnosed with dementia; nonetheless, the report states that Mavis has struggled with these impairments.

Under the heading “ability to consent to medical treatment” the doctor’s report indicated that the doctor marked the box which indicated that Mavis “lacks the capacity to give informed consent to any form of medical treatment because she is either (1) unable to respond knowingly and intelligently regarding medical treatment or (2) unable to participate in a treatment decision by means of a rational thought process, or both.”
Furthermore, Leno claims in the court records that the conservatorship would enable him to administer the estate, “which will provide for Mavis and Mavis’s brother [who is] her sole living heir aside from Jay.” Jay is the only living heir to Mavis’s fortune.
Neither Leno nor Mavis have any children, and the last time they were seen together was on November 7th, when they went to The Improv in Hollywood to celebrate its 60th anniversary. The representative for Leno has been contacted by ET for comment.
First to break the news was the website TMZ.
It has been less than a month since the former host of the Tonight Show said to Entertainment Tonight that his high-profile, near-passing experiences that he has had over the course of the previous year have not altered his perspective on life.
“It hasn’t changed it at all,” that is what Leno remarked. “Once a man hits 40, you can’t convince him of anything else.”
In November of 2022, Leno was working on a vintage automobile when he was involved in a terrifying accident in the garage. As a result of the accident, his face caught fire, and he was taken to the hospital. After that, in January of 2023, Leno was pushed off of one of his bikes, which resulted in him suffering severe injuries and a number of shattered bones.
The bikes are still in my possession. Despite the fact that I’m still working on vehicles, I’m still falling off,” Leno stated. “No, once a guy learns [something], you can’t teach him new tricks.”
