The bond of sisters that exists between Blake Lively and America Ferrera is quite deep.
As Ferrera, 39, won the SeeHer Award at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards on Sunday night, Lively sent a message on Monday expressing her admiration for her longtime friend and co-star in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Ferrera was also the recipient of the award.
“Give this woman every stage, every statue, and every microphone forever please,” Lively, who is 36 years old, said on her Instagram Story as she uploaded a video of the Barbie actress’s momentous occasion.
“My god we are blessed to orbit in the same times as you my sister, @americaferrera,” said Lively further.
Ferrera was honored with the SeeHer Award on Sunday at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. The award was handed to her by her co-star in the Barbie franchise, Margot Robbie.
The moment Ferrera stepped onto the platform, she immediately began a speech in which she discussed the significance of the accolade to her and revealed that it “couldn’t be more meaningful to me” because of her historical background.
“I want to see individuals who were similar to me on TV as whole human beings. It seemed inconceivable to me when I first began working, which was more than twenty years ago. The actress said that it seemed to be an inconceivable possibility that someone could build a career out of playing Latina characters that were fully realistic.
Ferrera also said, “But because of writers, producers and directors … I and some of my fellow Latina colleagues have been supremely blessed to have brought to life some fierce and fantastic women.”
Many of the women in the crowd looked to be moved by her message, including Brie Larson, who appeared to shed tears, and Taraji P. Henson, who was spotted shaking her head in agreement with what Ferrera was saying.
In addition, the former cast member of Ugly Betty devoted a portion of her remarks to Greta Gerwig, the filmmaker of Barbie.
“Thank you for proving through your incredible mastery as a filmmaker that women’s stories have no difficulty achieving cinematic greatness and box office history at the same time,” Ferrera told the forty-something Gerwig. “And that unabashedly telling female stories does not diminish your powers, it expands them.”
Ferrera tweeted, “Thank you to @criticschoice for honoring me with the #SeeHer Award.” This was written in the caption of her own Instagram picture that included her remarks on Monday. I am very grateful that I have the chance to be honest about what it means to me and to speak from the heart.
Amber Tamblyn, who also appears in Sisterhood with Lively and Ferrera, commented on the post, saying, “You are extraordinary, and that is all there is to it.” You have my love.
The SeeHer Award was formed in 2017 as a result of a partnership between the Critics Choice Association and a group of worldwide organizations that are involved in marketing and information dissemination. The award recognizes the leading women of the silver screen who stand up for gender equality and depict characters who are genuine and push the boundaries of what is considered acceptable.
Previous winners of the SeeHer Award include Janelle Monáe in 2023, Zendaya in 2021, Viola Davis in 2017, and Halle Berry in 2022. Janelle Monáe was the recipient of the award as well.
