Becoming a witness to a flash mob is an exciting experience. Flash mobs continue to captivate audiences and make for a compelling viewing experience, despite the fact that they are not performed as frequently as they once were. One of the most advantageous aspects of this kind of choreographed and planned performance is that it has the ability to bring together a wide variety of individuals. When all is said and done, it does appear as though a random group of people started dancing together in perfect unison all of a sudden among those who are witnesses.
The formation of a flash mob in a large metropolitan area, such as Chicago or New York, is more likely to involve the coming together of a group of people who are completely unrelated to one another. On the other hand, in smaller places, an already robust community is strengthened even further. This is especially true for high school students, who are able to create something that they will remember for the rest of their lives while also having a good time together.
In the past, Scott Pankey, a theater instructor from Dallas, had choreographed a flash mob in order to create unity among his students and to connect with them. Indeed, the flash mob had even gone viral. Through the utilization of Bruno Mars’s popular song “Uptown Funk,” Pankey crafted a masterpiece.
Currently, another group of high school students from the town of Saanich in Canada had a fantastic time participating in a flash mob with some pretty remarkable individuals: the police officers of their town. During the month of May in 2017, the students got together to dance to Mars’ song “Uptown Funk,” which appears to be one of the most popular songs for a performance such as this one! The end result is something that should be seen!
The Saanich Police Department issued a statement to the media stating that the officers had participated in a week of rehearsals prior to the performance that was put on by the group of police officers and more than one hundred students. According to the statement, there was more to this pairing of law enforcement officers and students than just the fact that the practice and execution of the dance mob was a lot of fun during the occurrence.

One of the objectives of this event was to foster a unique relationship between the university students and the law enforcement officers. I was able to accomplish this by taking part in the dance classes with the students. These classes provided an opportunity for the police officers and the students to smile and laugh together while working toward the common goal of dancing together in a flash mob.
The statement went on to say that “dancing in public as part of a flash mob was definitely outside of the comfort zone of the majority of officers, but they were willing to step outside the box and create a special and lasting memory for our community.” There were smiles on the faces of everyone who was present at Uptown on the day that the flash mob took place.
The wonderful thing about dance is that it brings people together regardless of who they are. In this particular instance, both high school students and law enforcement officers were able to relax their guards and become more comfortable with one another in order to achieve a common objective. It’s possible that not everyone is comfortable dancing, but by creating an atmosphere of acceptance and comfort around them, the police officers and the students were able to have an experience that they will never forget: it was unforgettable!
In many cases, individuals may feel intimidated by members of the police force; however, as a result of activities such as these, a significant number of young people are coming to the realization that they share more similarities with law enforcement officers than they had previously believed.
