With a “sudden illness” in Italy, Patti Smith was admitted to the hospital for treatment, and she has since been released from the facility.
During an interview with PEOPLE, the hospital press officer Ilaria Maria Di Battista said that the chief of the emergency unit, Dr. Alessio Bertini, had made the following statement to her: “Mrs. Smith was very polite and collaborative with us, which made it easier for us to do our job to the best of our capabilities.”
For us and for a great number of generations, she is a person who serves as a point of reference. According to Battista, the statements made by the leader of the unit on his meeting with Smith included the fact that “we even had the opportunity to speak about music and our favorite songs.”
Another hospital source said that before she left, she gave the medical personnel a hug and expressed her gratitude for their support. One member of the team even managed to get her to chuckle when he reminded her to invite them to her next Italian show.
Additionally, Battista said that Smith, who is 76 years old, should be able to resume his performance “after a necessary period of rest.” After the postponement of the singer’s performance in Bologna, as well as her show in Venice and book signing in Milan, this news comes as a result of the cancelation.
A presentation by Smith that was supposed to take place on Tuesday was canceled, according to an announcement made by Teatro Duse.
“With great regret, we inform the kind audience that the [Patti Smith] concert scheduled for today, December 12, 2023 at 9 p.m. will not be able to go on stage due to a sudden illness that struck the artist,” the venue posted on Instagram. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

The theater continued by saying, “We are all sorry for the inconvenience that this news has caused because of it.” Our thoughts and prayers are with the artist, and we hope that they make a rapid recovery.
On her way to Italy to conduct her eight-date “A Tour of Italian Days” tour, Smith became unwell soon after landing in Bologna. This caused her to miss the rest of the trip. On Tuesday evening, at about six o’clock local time, the personnel of the Grand Hotel Majestic reported that they were alerted of a “person feeling unwell.” An instant call was placed to a physician to undertake a quick general consultation with Smith, and after the appointment, it was decided that the celebrity would be transported to a nearby hospital in a vehicle that was chauffeured.
In addition to Ancona on November 28, Bari, Naples, and Modena were among the tour stops that Smith had scheduled in Italy prior to her admission to the hospital. Her performances in the United States were also planned, beginning with a show in Chicago on December 23 and continuing with shows in Brooklyn, New York, on December 29 and 30.
While all is going on, Smith has been posting updates on her tour in Italy on her Instagram account. When she tweeted a picture of her kid Jackson at the Milan Central train station, she captioned it with the following: “This is my son Jackson with my suitcase.” “As we move from one location to another, I move at my own pace while keeping an eye on each other.”
