At the age of 19, Hamna Zafar was aware that she would be forced to give up her family if she did not consent to an arranged marriage with her cousin who lived in Pakistan. However, since she was reluctant to give up her American ambition of making her own life, the obedient daughter rebelled and chose to flee to a destiny that led to her serving in the United States Air Force for the purpose of achieving her goal.
Always in my thoughts were my mother and father. At all times, I was thinking about my family. Zafar, who is 23 years old, tells People that he has always wondered about his sisters. That evening, however, I was thinking about myself.
As a result of her decision, she was aware that she would be unable to maintain touch with her two cherished younger sisters and that her parents would never forgive her for her actions. She also knew that she would lose her extended relatives in Pakistan.
Zafar, who was raised in Maryland by a family of immigrants, never imagined that she would be forced to travel this path to get to her destination. The dutiful youngster who achieved high grades, Zafar, who now spends her days defending the base as an Air Force Security Defender, says that she remained close to home, took care of her sister who has autism, and intended on beginning a profession once she graduated from college.
Zafar claims that her parents did not object to her obtaining an education when she was a youngster; nonetheless, they insisted that she would ultimately settle down as a bride and mother with a spouse whom they specifically picked for her.
I was simply anticipating that my family would eventually get used to the culture that is prevalent in the United States,” she adds. They never really brought up the topic of arranged marriage while I was growing up.
When the college student flew to Pakistan in 2019 for a family vacation, she was surprised to find out that she was really there for her own engagement party. This completely transformed the situation.
“I was under the impression that it was a typical vacation for the family to Pakistan. It was then that I saw the clothes and the jewels,” Zafar adds. I was about to enter my twenties, and they wanted to make sure that I was aware that I was engaged and that I was not seeing any other men.
Despite the fact that her cousin seemed to be extremely pleased about their engagement, she admits that she got lost in a fog during the whole procedure and scarcely spoke with the man she was about to marry.

Zafar made an effort to persuade her mother to change her mind once the family had returned to the United States after the celebrations and visit.
Zafar explains, “My parents are very traditional, and they have never adapted to the culture of the United States.” It was for this reason that they brought me to Pakistan in order to get engaged.
Zafar’s parents were overcome with fear when they found out that she intended to join the military in order to escape her predicament.
According to Zafar, “I was totally reliant on them from the beginning.” But I was aware that I needed to go.
She managed to get away with the assistance of a Navy recruiter and then moved to a low-cost motel in order to wait until she could join the Navy. On the other hand, the COVID epidemic and other worries caused her to question her own priorities.
When Zafar’s college buddy Austin recommended that she move in with him and his family, she was exhausted, penniless, and on the verge of giving in to the demands of her parents. Zafar claims she was nearly ready to consent to their requests. She remained with her family until she had completed her associate degree, at which point she made the decision to serve in the military in the year 2022.
When Claudia Barrera, the woman Zafar now refers to as his mother, took her in, she said, “She is so small and humble that you can’t help but want to protect her.” I couldn’t help but weep as we left her off for basic training since she seemed to be so very little. Zafar reveals that she had a major cultural shock when she first began her training to become an Air Force officer.
This was the first time I had ever attended boot camp, and I had no clue what to expect. “In order to get a mental picture of what was going to take place, I watched a few videos,” Zafar explains. I can say without a doubt that it was an enlightening experience.
Despite the fact that she had never been shouted at before, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she had done something very wrong.
According to Zafar, “They are literally getting paid to yell at you, so that was going to be a very difficult situation.” “You are attempting to acclimate to a new situation while being taught what to do without interruption at all times. Without a doubt, it was terrifying.
Zafar, who stands at a height of 5 feet 2 inches, acknowledges that the physical demands were equally challenging, as she was continuously confronted with tests to the endurance of her body. “Your body gets used to the physical activities,” she explains, referring to the fact that she marched constantly, crawled through dirt, and pushed her body to its greatest potential. Even before your body does, your mind has already given up.
“You need to control your mindset,” she continues, referring to the lesson that she learnt, “because your mind is always stronger than your body.”
Now, Zafar is able to draw strength from the relationships that she has developed with her coworkers.
The beginning of this year marked the beginning of Sgt. Robert Stewart’s employment with Zafar at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico. He said that he was very moved by her narrative and is pleased by the progress that she has made over her life.
According to Stewart, who is 39 years old, his wife also assists in providing support to Zafar. “I told her she just needed someone to believe in you,” Stewart adds. You won’t find another airman just like her. In terms of both her manner and her story, she is a precious diamond.
The most challenging moment for her was when she graduated from basic training and wanted her family to see her and everything that she had done. She wanted them to see her. She claims that she has made several attempts to get in touch with her family, but they have not replied to her.
