Recently, the actor gave an interview in which he discussed the choice not to extend his contract.
Roger Howarth was fired from his part on the long-running daytime soap series General Hospital after he had played the character for 11 years and approximately 900 episodes.
Howarth first appeared on the program in 2012 as the character Todd Manning, whom he had previously represented for a decade on One Life to Live. He went on to play two additional characters throughout the remainder of his stay on GH, with his most recent role being that of Dr. Austin Gatlin-Holt. Howarth joined the show in 2012.
Howarth spoke with Soap Opera Digest on Monday about his departure, and explained that he learned his contract wasn’t being renewed “several weeks ago” when he got a call from Executive Producer Frank Valentini telling him that, when his current contract with ABC was done, he “would not be offered a new contract and that the character of Austin would be killed, and that this was something they both wanted and needed to do to move story.”
Howarth said that he was taken aback by the information, but the fact that he has had such good fortune is what he is truly taking away from the event.
“I had no idea how fortunate I was until I was able to look back on my career and see that I had been able to spend more than a decade doing something that I truly loved doing with individuals that I had really enjoyed working with. I am one blessed individual. “I had a great run, and this decision was made by people who make these kinds of decisions for a living,” Howarth revealed with the publication. “This was a decision made by people who make these kinds of decisions for a living.” “For a long time I’ve enjoyed coming to work, learning lines and saying them with really cool people.”

Howarth continued by saying that he does not “feel like I’ve been slighted in any way or that there was bad juju around these decisions.”
“I think that the writers and the producers and the directors work really hard to entertain a really loyal and dedicated audience and I hope that they succeed in thrilling the audience for another 60 years,” according to Howarth. “Let me start by saying that I am really pleased with myself; to tell you the absolute truth, and in all honesty before God, I have always given it my best. Therefore, there is, in the end, no loss on my end. I am certain that I done all that was in my power.”
Howarth also posted some wise words on his Instagram account, along with a shot of his shadow cast across a wall.
“There are three things that I am absolutely certain of… I am indebted to each and every one of the 1 Daytime fans because they are all so kind and wonderful, as well as supportive and devoted, and I think they are dazzling. 2 My time spent on General Hospital was quite enjoyable, and I hope that the show’s cast and staff have a lot of future success. It was a delight to collaborate with everyone of you. 3 Life is very wonderful. Simply put, we have no idea what the future holds for us. How wonderful! The post was captioned by Howarth. “Turn in the direction of the light. In every case. A huge thank you to each and every one of you.”
