Both Maryanne and Tommy Pilling were diagnosed as having Down syndrome. They managed to defy the odds and live a long life together, becoming the first couple with Down syndrome in Britain to be married. They also outlived everyone else in their family. However, things did not always go well for the couple; in later years, they were subjected to a tragic misfortune that changed their lives forever.

According to a piece that was written and published by the Daily Express in February of 2017, it is said that the pair had been dating for almost a year before Tommy made the decision to ask for her hand in marriage.

“The day that Maryanne met Tommy, she returned to her house with the broadest grin she had ever seen on her face. According to Lindi, Maryanne’s sister, “She couldn’t stop talking about him and asked if he could come for dinner.” Lindi is Maryanne.

When Tommy initially approached Maryanne’s mother, Linda, he presented her with a toy ring that he had purchased from a vending machine.

The woman’s mother was pleased to hear of his intentions to begin a new phase of his life with the lady, but the rest of the family insisted that they get a good ring, so the woman’s mother went with him to a jewelry store.

Last but not least, the pair tied the knot in St. Mary’s Church in Shoeburyness, Essex, in the month of July 1995. It was the day that Maryanne had been waiting for her whole life as she had dreamed of having a large white wedding ever since she was a little kid. Finally, the day had arrived.

“The day of my wedding was the most memorable day of my whole life. “Tommy’s proposal took me completely by surprise, but I didn’t have to give it much thought before accepting,” Maryanne said.

After the event, the couple would often be seen walking about while holding hands; nevertheless, this did not guarantee that they would not attract the attention of others, since there were some individuals who passed judgment on their relationship.

“Some people stare, and they assume that people with Down syndrome and learning difficulties can’t get married,” Lindi said. “It’s a misconception.”

Maryanne followed by elaborating on the depth of her affection for her husband by saying, “Tommy and I never get into fights.” I have a deep and abiding affection for my hubby. He is one of my closest friends.

Throughout the duration of their marriage, the pair defied all expectations by maintaining their independence and living in their own house with the help of their relatives who resided next door.

Because Tommy and Maryanne had a Facebook profile together, hundreds of individuals from all around the world were privy to the intimate details of their relationship.

Unfortunately, in 2019, Metro reported that the pair had to end their marriage because Tommy’s dementia pulled them apart. Tommy’s dementia caused him to forget who his wife was, which led to an argument between the two of them late at night, during which he pushed her away and told her that he didn’t love her.

Maryanne reported feeling “absolutely crushed and hysterical” as a result of this.

Tommy was one of the persons who succumbed to the COVID-19 epidemic the following year, when it first began spreading around the world. Maryanne’s heart is crushed as a result of this significant loss.

It was reported that the widow gave it her best effort to go on with her life after the tragedy in a post that was uploaded on their Facebook page in the month of December 2020.

“She is completely off the rails. She is doing her best to put up a strong front, but she can’t help but burst into tears at the most inopportune moments… “She is distraught and it is not getting any easier but she is staying with our mother so she is distracted and keeping busy but it is still not helping,” her sister said. “She is staying with our mother so she is distracted and keeping busy but it is still not helping.”

Later on, Maryanne and her mother gave an interview to ITV News in April 2021 to provide an update on the situation. During the interview, it was revealed that the widow had a difficult time comprehending what the pandemic was at the time and why her husband had fallen suddenly.

She still loves him a great deal even to this day and would smile everytime she heard Tommy’s name since she misses him so much. Regardless, she still misses him horribly and would smile whenever she heard his name.
