They were taken aback when Graham and Stephanie Freels learned that they would be expecting five children all at once. After five years of trying without success to have a family, the couple finally gave up. After being married in 2017, Stephanie had a pituitary cyst removed, but the couple was still unable to conceive a child. As a result, they decided to induce Stephanie’s ovulation and then implant an embryo into her uterus.
In December of 2022, Stephanie received the news that she was expecting a child, but the family was in for an even larger shock. After having an ultrasound in January, it was determined that Stephanie was carrying five infants at the same time. In April of 2023, an ecstatic Graham posted the news on Facebook and even began a blog to give updates with his friends and family.
Graham and Stephanie’s reactions to the news were contradictory: they were both overjoyed and terrified. They had previously intended to move out of Stephanie’s parents’ house, where they had been residing since they were married, and had signed a lease for a tiny apartment. However, circumstances beyond their control prevented them from carrying out their original plan. They decided to get out of the lease as they were expecting kids.
Graham shared his story with Good Morning America (GMA), saying that he phoned the apartment’s owner and said, “I think we’re about to have a lot of kids, and I don’t think that apartment is going to work for us anymore.”
Additionally, in March of 2023, the Freel family made a short-term move to Phoenix, Arizona, so that Dr. John Elliott, a specialist in maternal and fetal medicine who had assisted in the delivery of several kids, could monitor the pregnancy. Dr. Elliott had previously assisted in the delivery of multiple babies. The couple shared how Dr. Elliot eased their anxieties about having five children at once by prescribing medication.
While Graham was working from a distant location in Phoenix and taking care of his wife, she had to fight through the acute and unremitting nausea and vomiting that came with her pregnancy.
“I think that was the hardest part of pregnancy for me, that I had to try to meet that (calorie) goal,” she said. “I had to watch everything I ate.” “I didn’t really start eating solid foods on a regular basis until I was about 23 weeks pregnant,” she said.
Stephanie went into labor in the 27th week of her pregnancy, despite the Freels’ best efforts to extend the pregnancy to the full 34 weeks. As a result, an emergency cesarean section had to be performed at St. Joseph’s Hospital. On June 4, 2023, the procedure, which included more than 20 members of the medical community, resulted in the delivery of four girls and a boy.
The births were announced in a news release that the hospital distributed. Adelyn, Eliana, Linnea, Harper, and Fisher were chosen as the names for the set of fraternal quintuplets. They were around 2 pounds when they were born and spent 11 weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) because they required breathing assistance.
According to Andrea Hassler, who serves as the nursing director of women and newborn care at the hospital, the institution is blessed with a Nursery Intensive Care Unit (NyICU) that is well-known for caring for “some of the most fragile babies.” The newborns were perfectly healthy and there were no major issues.
“We had been asking God to bless us with children for a long time, and now it seemed like our prayers were finally being answered! According to the announcement, Stephanie was quoted as saying, “I have always wanted a large family, but I could have never imagined that it would happen all at once.”
On August 19, 2023, Fisher was the last of the newborns to be released from the hospital. He was also the lone male. After that, the couple relocated to Stephanie’s parents’ house in Washington, where they received a significant amount of assistance.
“It’s amazing having them at home,” Stephanie said when she was interviewed by GMA. “And it’s so nice not having to take them back and forth to the NICU,” said the mother.
The new parents expressed their gratitude to the individuals, including complete strangers, family members, and friends, who helped them with presents and services. They extended their gratitude to the medical staff for their attention as well.
“They really are simply incredible people, and the level of care they put into taking care of not just our twins, but every single infant they’re dealing with, is nothing short of astounding. “They’re making incredible progress,” Graham said.
