Robert Irwin is commemorating a momentous achievement with a party.
In a video that was uploaded to TikTok on Saturday, the young man, who is now 19 years old, said that the Australia Zoo has a new inhabitant who has a very special link to his late father, wildlife expert Steve Irwin. Robert was filled with emotion as he talked about the recent hatching of an Irwin’s turtle, which represented the first time the rare freshwater species was produced in a zoo since Steve found a female specimen on a crocodile-hunting trip on the Burdekin River in Queensland in 1990. Robert was speaking about the recent hatching of an Irwin’s turtle, which marked the first time the rare freshwater species was bred in a zoo.
“Not only is this one of the most memorable experiences of my entire life, but it is also one of the most important milestones in the history of Australia Zoo.” As he told it, “this is the very first Elseya irwini, also known as an Irwin’s turtle, that has ever hatched for any zoological facility located anywhere in the world.”
Robert said, “This species is a turtle that dad originally discovered out in the wild, and for the first time we’ve got a little baby.” At this point, an old photograph of his father holding up the adult Irwin’s turtle that he discovered showed on the screen.

The video shows Robert standing over a little pond at the zoo as he was holding the baby turtle in his hand. The pond was quite small. “Right now, he’s getting in his first swim in a brand new pond,” he added further. “Let me show you a tiny piece of the wilderness. Put him in the pool, we’ll see what happens.”
Robert said, “Off he goes,” in reference to the individual. Robert focused on the profound experience that he was having at the time and the memories of his father that were coming to the surface as he watched the newborn turtle swim away and begin to investigate its new environment.
He spoke the words “It’s just so surreal” when his voice cracked slightly. “And then there are all those tales that Mom has told you about how incredible and lovely they are… He stated, “I don’t get emotional that much, but I just know that Dad would be really proud, Dad would be stoked.” “I don’t get emotional that much.”
Robert said in the title of his film that “a rare and unique species that was under threat in the wild has just been given a second chance.” This was an important point to make.
According to Wildlife Warriors, the animal conservation nonprofit that Steve and his wife Terri Irwin created in 2002, Irwin’s turtles have a particular habitat that requires fresh oxygenated water to facilitate cloacal respiration. since of this, Irwin’s turtles are prone to habitat degradation since their habitat is so specific. The population of this particular species of turtle has seen a precipitous drop every year since 1987, when a dam was constructed on the Burdekin River.
Robert Irwin and his sister, Bindi Irwin, routinely post memories of their late father on social media. Steve Irwin passed away in 2006 at the age of 44 after being stung by a stingray. When Robert was paying respect to his old “ute” on Instagram in April, he reflected on the good moments he had spent with his father and shared those memories with his followers.
“That’s my pops’ truck… It’s a one-of-a-kind automobile. “From early memories when Dad would park and let me pretend to drive, to more recent times when I took my drivers test in it (and somehow managed not to stall it ),” he wrote, accompanied by a picture of himself as a small kid grasping the car’s steering wheel while sitting on Steve’s lap in the passenger seat of the vehicle. Steve was his father.
The post made by Robert also included two more current photographs of him with the vehicle, which he is still using at this time. “I remember my first solo drive in this car after I got my license — it was to the hospital to meet my niece for the first time,” he continued, alluding to the birth of Grace Warrior in March 2021, which was Bindi’s daughter. “It was to the hospital to meet my niece for the first time.” “And now, the ute still comes on road trips to this day…”
@robertirwin Wow. This was a special moment. I think Dad would be pretty proud that we’ve become the first to successfully breed the turtle that he discovered. A rare, and unique species under threat in the wild has just been given a second chance.
