Before we have direct experience with the events described, they may as well be fairy tales. A British environmentalist named Damian Aspinall set out from one of Africa’s numerous jungles to look for a gorilla named Kwibi. Aspinall had been responsible for the gorilla’s upbringing, but it had been five years since he had seen Kwibi.
According to the story presented by Aqua Vita Studios, Kwibi was brought up by Aspinall in the Howletts Wild Animal Park in England, which was Aspinall’s native country. However, Aspinall was aware that the proper action to do was to release Kwibi back into his native environment. Therefore, he let the gorilla free in the jungle of Gabon, which is located in West Africa.
As part of a conservation effort that attempted to reintroduce gorillas to their natural habitat, Kwibi was five years old when Aspinall released him into the wild.
After five years, Aspinall had the desire to visit Kwibi once again, therefore he made the decision to go on a mission. However, other conservationists who were working in the rainforests of Gabon informed Aspinall that Kwibi did not get along well with humans and that he had assaulted the two most recent individuals who had encountered him.
However, Aspinall was adamant on reestablishing contact with Kwibi. In light of what the other environmentalists had cautioned him about, he also made sure to observe the safety measures that were essential.
Aspinall continued his effort to locate Kwibi in the expansive bush by traveling there by boat. While Aspinall yelled for Kwibi, he and his squad navigated their way downstream in the river.
“I was very dead set on meeting up with him. After getting in the boat with my brother, we navigated the river in both directions for a good chunk of the day. Aspinall said, “I received this message for the gorillas.”
The crew noticed Kwibi just as the boat rounded a bend in the river. Aspinall’s call had been heard by the now 10-year-old gorilla, and it had responded by coming down to the edge of the river to see him. Aspinall thought that Kwibi looked great, but it remained to be seen how he would act when they were truly face to face.
After seeing Kwibi on the other side of the river, Aspinall and his colleagues pushed the boat across to the place where they saw him. For many years, Aspinall had been looking forward to this get-together, but he had no idea how the gorilla would respond. Before they disembarked, he and his colleagues devised a strategy in which they would toss food at the gorilla in the event that it grew violent. However, Aspinall would not give up hope that Kwibi might recall seeing him before.
Aspinall stepped off the boat, and after a brief separation, he was able to find Kwibi again. Kwibi approached him in a hesitant manner just as he was sitting down on the ground, just before the two of them pressed their heads together. Aspinall understood from the series of deep, rumbling growls that Kwibi let out that everything was OK with him. Aspinall placed a leaf in his mouth and then offered it to Kwibi, who was sitting on the other side of the room from him.
It was a fantastic experience for me when he stared into my eyes with such passion and affection. We did nothing except sit there together, kind of high off of one other. Aspinall said on the two people’s first encounter, “He embraced me like a long-lost friend, and it was just beautiful.”
Kwibi showed Aspinall an incredible amount of affection, and very quickly, the other of the members of Kwibi’s group came to visit him as well. Before returning to the mainland, his only concern was making sure that Kwibi was in good condition and enjoying himself. As the sun started to set, it was time for Aspinall and the team to depart, but Kwibi, who was sitting behind Aspinall with his arms around him, would not let him leave. As the daylight became darker, it was time for Aspinall and the team to leave. They were ultimately able to get Aspinall back on the boat by using some raisins as bait to encourage him to leave the area.
However, much to Aspinall’s surprise, Kwibi followed the boat, and he and his family eventually made their home on the other bank of the river, precisely opposite the camp that Aspinall had established. Aspinall saw Kwibi once again the next morning as he was swimming in the morning.
