Skydiving is one of those activities that individuals often put to their list of things to accomplish before they die, but not everyone believes that it’s still viable to do so at an advanced age. This is the story of a lady who braved all odds and set a record for herself by being the oldest person to ever skydive.

Dorothy Hoffner, a lady who lived in an apartment in Chicago and was 104 years old when a piece on her was published in Today in October 2022, performed the unimaginable by the time she reached that age. Despite the fact that she was an older person, she nevertheless made it through her life to the point where she was able to skydive twice.

Earlier in same month, Hoffner, who had never been married and never had any children in her life, did her second dive with Skydive Chicago with a qualified tandem instructor from the United States Parachute Association called Derek Baxter. Baxter was Hoffner’s instructor.

Hoffner revealed to the publication that she did not feel apprehensive about leaping even though she was 13,000 feet in the air, despite the fact that this kind of exercise may be nerve-wracking for some individuals.

When we were on the verge of stepping off the aircraft, a strong gust of wind occurred and caused us to turn back. “That was the most enjoyable part,” she said.

It would seem that she has surpassed the record that was previously held by a Swedish woman named Rut Linnéa Ingegard Larsson, who skydived at the age of 103 years and 259 days.

According to FOX 32 Chicago’s story from October 2023, Skydive Chicago was collaborating with Guinness World Records to validate Hoffner’s skydiving experience.

She said to the publication that she became interested in skydiving after she became 100 years old, when a friend of hers named Joe Conant brought up the subject in 2019, to which she enthusiastically consented.

In addition to her personal life, Hoffner was employed at Illinois Bell Telephone for a period of time that spanned over forty years. When she was in her 60s, she made the decision to resign from her job.

It is possible that her genes have played a role in her long life, since both of her parents survived into their 80s and her mother passed away at the age of 92.

Hoffner was always a daring young lady, even in her younger years, as shown by the fact that she used to travel all over the globe. In point of fact, she disclosed that she had been to every state in the United States, with the exception of Alaska.

Despite the fact that she lived to be 104 years old, she struggled with her health, requiring surgery to remove malignant breast tissue and suffering from macular degeneration, which made it difficult for her to drive and read.

In October 2023, only a few days after completing her second skydive, Dorothy Hoffner went tragically unexpectedly.

The lady passed away quietly while she was sleeping, according to her close friend Joe Conant, who also used to work at the Brookdale Senior Living facility where Hoffner resided. This information was shared with The Chicago Tribune.

In addition, he said that Hoffner originally did not want the attention that she received from the media, and that she did not jump with the sole intention of breaking a record.

He added that the reason she was doing it wasn’t because she wanted to break a world record; rather, she was doing it because she wanted to go skydiving.

Hoffner was expected to celebrate her 105th birthday in December 2023, and she revealed to Today that one of her goals for the occasion was to go on a trip in a hot air balloon.

In spite of the fact that she has passed away, it seems as if she had a happy and fulfilled life, as she had previously mentioned in an interview: “I didn’t expect to be this old… “I have been blessed with a very amazing life,” she remarked.
