Halle Berry is an established actress who has been working in Hollywood for more than three decades at this point. The former model and beauty pageant queen made history by becoming the first Black woman to represent the United States of America in the Miss World pageant. She also made history by becoming the first and only Black woman to receive an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal in the film “Monster Ball.”
But despite all of Berry’s successes, her life has been marked by a great deal of suffering due to the many paths she has taken.
Due to the fact that Berry is biracial, she was frequently the target of racist attacks. Berry and her elder sister were removed from their inner-city Cleveland schools by their mother, Judith Ann Hawkins, at an early age due to the high levels of violence that were present in those schools. Instead, the family moved to the suburbs, where Berry and her sister were educated alongside primarily white students. As a result, they were presented with a fresh challenge.
Because my mother was of European descent, and my father was of African descent… “Kids just didn’t understand us, so they called us Oreos and other names; as a result, we were different,” Berry explained to People.
Berry also watched her stepfather beat her mother on multiple occasions. At the time, she was only five years old. Because of her personal experience, the actress decided to donate her time to the Jenesse Centre, which runs Los Angeles’s first and oldest intervention programme for victims of domestic violence.
“Domestic abuse has taken its toll on me. “My mother was married to a man who beat her up, but I was never married to a man who did that to me,” she remarked at a community gathering in 2015.
The Academy Award Winner’s mother was subjected to daily beatings and was once thrown down the stairs. In addition to that, she had a bottle shattered on the back of her head. Berry and her sister both had severe psychological effects as a result of the ordeal since she did not remove them quickly enough.
Berry attempted to make up for the rejection that she had felt by giving whatever she did her complete and undivided attention. This is made very clear by the fact that she completely inhabits the roles that she plays.
The road that Berry took to become an actress was arduous, and the only reason she persisted was because quitting was not an option.
Berry gave acting a try after a mentor suggested it to her, and she travelled to New York with money she had saved from modelling. However, the money she had saved ran out after only three months in the city. Because her mother refused to send her any money, she was forced to spend the next year living in a homeless shelter before she could get back on her feet financially.
The actress shared the following story with People in 2017: “I called my mother, and I asked her to send me some money, and she said no, and that subsequently led to a year of not speaking to her because I was so upset that she wouldn’t help me,” the actress recalled. “I was so upset that she wouldn’t help me that I didn’t speak to her for an entire year.”
Despite this, Berry noted that her mother’s refusal to allow her to participate helped her develop her own identity. These two are now considered to be good friends.
Even though it was tough for the actress to secure roles in Hollywood due to the colour of her skin, she didn’t let it stop her from achieving success in the industry. She put a lot of effort into the ones that she got, and it wasn’t long before her talent got noticed by a lot of people. In an article that was published on July 7, 1992, the aspiring actress was compared to Jack Lemmon and William Holden when they were just starting out in the industry.

Berry is, however, devastated by the fact that she is, to this day, the only woman of African descent to ever win the prize in that category. Even when she won an Oscar, she was not cast in as many roles as she had anticipated she would be. Berry persevered in her pursuit of parts, including the lead role in “Bruised,” the film in which she made her directing debut. The title of the film aptly described her position, as she suffered multiple wounds while working on the set of the movie.
During the course of filming “Living Dolls,” Berry was informed that she had type 2 diabetes. “Diabetes caught me completely off guard,” Berry said in an interview with the Daily Mail in 2005. She blamed her bones breaking easily on set to her diabetes, which caused her to be in a diabetic coma for a week at one point.
She told Variety that she initially feared it was due to osteoporosis or cancer after she cracked some ribs while filming “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum.” She broke the ribs while working on “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum.” In addition, Berry required an operation lasting thirty minutes in 2002 after fragments of a smoke grenade went into one of his eyes while he was filming “Die Another Day.” Her medical professional remarked:
“In point of fact, she has been quite fortunate.”
Berry, on the other hand, is no stranger to failed relationships; she has been divorced three times and lost 80 percent of the hearing in her left ear as a result of a violent ex-husband, who many people thought was her first husband, David Justice. It wasn’t until 2015, when she was going through her third divorce, that he admitted that it wasn’t him.
“Not only did David Justice not do that, but David Justice never hit her, period,” the retired professional baseball player told People. “Not only did David Justice not do that, but David Justice never hit her, period.”
Berry, for her part, disclosed that following their divorce, she made an attempt on her own life. She proclaimed that she “was going to sit in the car and asphyxiate myself,” but she ultimately refrained from carrying out her plan due of her mother’s selflessness.
Berry got married to Eric Benét in 2001, but she filed for divorce in 2003 after a number of claims of adultery surfaced between the couple. Benét, on the other hand, admitted that while he did cheat on his partner, there was no sexual activity involved.
In 2005, Berry began a relationship with Gabriel Aubry, and in 2008, the couple became parents to a girl named Nahla. They divorced in 2010, and the subsequent custody battle was a nasty one. In addition, Aubry got into a confrontation with Olivier Martinez, who was Berry’s third husband, in the city of Los Angeles.
Berry wed Martinez in 2013 and in October of that same year, they were blessed with a son named Maceo. She started the divorce process in 2015 and currently owes Aubry and Martinez each $8,000 per month in child support payments.
The actress has been in a relationship with Van Hunt since 2020, and she has stated that being with him has brought her happiness and tranquilly.
