During life-saving surgery, a tumor weighing 47 kilograms was successfully removed from a 56-year-old lady. It is believed that this tumor was the largest non-ovarian tumor that has ever been surgically removed from a patient in India.

The lady, whose name has not been disclosed, has been harboring the tumor for a period of time equaling eighteen years. When the extra skin and tissues from the abdominal wall that were removed during surgery are combined, the total weight of what was taken off is 54 kg.

“Because the patient was unable to stand, we were unable to weigh her before to the operation. However, after the procedure, she was back to her previous weight of 49 kg, according to Dr. Chirag Desai, a surgical gastroenterologist at Apollo Hospitals, who spoke with TOI.

“The total weight of the removal, which included the tumor (known in our field as a retroperitoneal leiomyoma), was more than the patient’s real body mass. “I’ve seen something like this only a few times,” the doctor stated.

According to the woman’s oldest son, the tumor was originally much smaller than it is now. The woman’s midsection has mysteriously ballooned due to an unexpected weight increase. She had some stomach issues and felt it was related to that, so she took some ayurvedic and allopathic medications. However, in 2004, it was determined that the growth was a benign tumor.

Her family made the decision to have surgery, but the doctor stopped the treatment when he realized that the tumor was linked to all of the patient’s internal organs because it was too dangerous.

The woman’s pain level remained high for the last four years as the size of the tumor continued to escalate. It was impossible for her to get out of bed.

The patient’s loved ones sought medical advice once again.

Dr. Desai said that all of her internal organs had been moved out of position. The enormous tumor in the stomach wall had pushed aside many organs, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, and uterus, among others. As a result, carrying out an operation without prior preparation was not an option. Due to the size of the tumor, the gantry of the CT scan equipment was unable to function properly. In order for us to be able to receive scans, we were required to bring in a technician who would change the bottom plate.
