Five years had passed since Bui Thi Hoi first saw the huge malformation, but she was unable to get surgery due to financial constraints.
It was around 12 by 14 centimeters in size, and it covered half of her face, impacted her skull, caused her to lose her right eye, and made it difficult for her to breathe.
Hoi said, “I had a hard time eating, drinking, and going about my daily activities.”
“I’ve had it for about five years, but I couldn’t afford the surgery during that time.”
However, after that, other individuals assisted me. Additionally, the physicians were helpful, and they had a pleasant demeanor.
A tumor was removed from Hoi during a procedure that lasted for five hours and was carried out in Hanoi last week by medical professionals from four different hospitals.
The National Institute of Burns, the Vietnam-German Friendship Hospital, the 103 Military Hospital, and the National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology all sent medical professionals to assist with the patient’s care.
Before and after her operation, Bui Thi Hoi is seen. Doctors in Hanoi successfully removed a massive tumor from the face of a 74-year-old lady who was originally from the province of Ha Tinh in the central region.
According to Dr. Vu Quang Vinh, who works at the National Institute of Burns, the patient was diagnosed with a fibrous tumor, which is an extremely uncommon form. Only between 0.05 and 0.5 percent of all face tumors in the globe are caused by this condition.
“In order to carry out this operation, we assembled a group of surgeons from four different institutions. We were able to totally remove the tumor in the first three hours of the operation, which took a total of five hours to conduct.
The quantity of blood that was lost during the procedure was not very significant, and the outcome of the operation turned out really well. One week following the operation, the patient was released from the critical care unit and allowed to go home.
Vinh also said that it was a difficult choice to go forward with the operation.
“We were frightened, really anxious. The patient is quite elderly, 74 years old, and in addition to the unusual tumor, she already had a great deal of underlying health problems.
“Because of how uncommon it is, there haven’t been too many procedures like this one performed in the past, and we had very little prior expertise with surgeries of this kind. Therefore, we need the hospitals to come to an agreement and work together in a professional capacity.
“After discussing it, we were aware that there was a potential that the patient might pass away during the procedure, but there was also a chance that it would be successful. And so long as there remained even a sliver of optimism, we reasoned that we needed to make the effort for her.

Vinh continued by saying that even if the operation hadn’t been carried out, the tumor would have been enough to put Hoi’s life in danger.
“The medical care was quite difficult due to the circumstances. However, the operation was a success, which tells a lot about the quality of Vietnam’s medical practice as well as the teamwork between hospitals at the central level, he added.
“The determination, expertise, and experience of the Vietnamese doctors were three of the contributing factors that helped bring about the success.” We also have the courage to think critically, to take bold actions, and to settle on difficult courses of action.
If we had given in to the pressure, we would have continued to reside in the secure area, and we would not have been able to advance our talents.

As for Hoi, it seems like a new chapter has started in her life.
“I feel much better, relieved, and no longer insecure about the tumour,” she said. “It’s been removed,” she said.
“I cannot express how grateful I am to the doctors and to everyone else who assisted me.”
Even Hoi’s sister, Bui Thi Chau, is relishing in her good fortune.
It was an extremely challenging voyage, as we were required to transport my sisters to and from a number of different hospitals. However, the outcome is just excellent,” Chau said.
“We are grateful to each and every one of you. It’s almost like she’s starting again with her life.
After spending the last two months in several hospitals, her vital signs are back to normal, and doctors believe she will be able to go home very soon.
