The test had been performed using her own saliva. She said that the suggestion of one of her physicians to undergo the test “just to be sure” was what “saved my life.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mutations in these genes significantly increase the chance of getting certain malignancies, in particular breast, ovarian, and prostate cancer. After that, Martin had an MRI and a sonogram, both of which helped confirm that she had breast cancer.
Martin, on the other hand, is not going to let the diagnosis knock her down.
“It takes a different approach for different individuals to deal with adversity; for me, it’s not crawling under the covers and sobbing. She stated, “Instead, I want to do everything in my power to beat this and protect my family.” Since September 2022, Martin has been happily married to the successful businessman Erik Brooks. Martin said that the most difficult aspect of the scenario was seeing her parents go through so much hardship. This is what she wrote:
“I am devastated for a lot of different reasons, but largely because of the way my parents are seeing me go through this. But I put all of my faith in my father, and he reassured me that we can handle this challenge together, saying, “We got this, and we will fight this together.” My heart is breaking, yet at the same time, I feel more powerful than ever.
As part of the therapy for the condition, according to Martin, she will have a double mastectomy and then undergo reconstruction. After receiving news from her physicians that her risk of developing ovarian cancer had increased by 20%, she announced that she would also undergo prophylactic surgery to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed. She said, “That is not a percentage that I am willing to live with,” indicating her disapproval of the figure.
Martin clarified that the purpose of her authoring the article was not “to scare you, but to raise awareness.” She went on to urge readers to obtain frequent screenings, speak to their physicians, and be educated, adding that mammograms miss one out of every eight cases of breast cancer, which is a statistic that comes from the American Cancer Society.
Martin went on to note that she had also written the article in consideration of something that is now often referred to as the “Angelina Jolie Effect.” This was in reference to the number of individuals who decided to be tested increasing by 105% in the six months after Angelina Jolie announced in 2013 that she would have prophylactic surgery owing to the fact that her mother had died from breast and ovarian cancer, and after she tested positive for the BRCA gene.
