At the forthcoming 2023 Daytime Emmy Awards, both Susan Lucci and Maury Povich will be recognized with a significant award in their respective fields.
As a result of the continuing strike by the Writers Guild of America in Hollywood, the 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards have been postponed. On Friday, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences made the announcement that hosts Susan Lucci and Maury Povich would receive the Lifetime Achievement Award during the rescheduled ceremony. Following the rescheduling of the telecasts, the awards will be given out live as they are being shown.
“I am truly humbled to receive this esteemed award from the Academy,” Lucci said in a statement after being presented with the medal. “Throughout the course of my career, I have had the incredible good fortune to collaborate with remarkable individuals and to be supported by my devoted followers who have been there for me at every turn.” This accolade is not only a reflection of my journey; rather, it is a monument to the lasting power of narrative and the tremendous connection that we are so fortunate to make with viewers all around the globe via television.
The former star of All My Children not only won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1999, but she was also nominated for the award an incredible 21 times during the course of her career. In addition to her role as Erica Kane on the ABC daytime drama, which she played for more than 40 years, Lucci’s acting accomplishments include Lifetime’s Devious Maids, the feature film Joy, hosting and narrating ID’s Deadly Affairs, and making guest appearances on shows such as Hot in Cleveland, Army Wives, Dancing with the Stars, and Saturday Night Live.
A star was placed in honor of Lucci on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the year 2005.
In his own comment, Povich said, “I’m really blown away by this accolade from the Academy. Since I was a member of the National Board and served as President of the New York Chapter, I have always had a high regard for the organization’s efforts. I suppose that if you stick around for a sufficient amount of time, some nice things will occur. I’ve worked in this industry for more than sixty years, so the fact that I’ve been recognized for my work makes me feel really grateful.
His eponymous first-run syndicated program, Maury, which aired from 1998 through 2022, is largely credited for securing Povich’s place in history as a legendary talk show host. A Current Affair (1986–1990) and The Maury Povich Show (1991–1998) are two of the most notable shows that Povich has hosted during his career.
Povich began his career in journalism by reporting on local events in Washington, District of Columbia. Later, he went on to anchor newscasts and host talk programs for stations owned and run by ABC, CBS, and NBC in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. Povich co-anchored the news with the woman who would eventually become his spouse, Connie Chung, during the time that he worked at the CBS station in Los Angeles.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) also made their announcements for this year’s Gold and Silver Circle honorees on Friday. These honorees are exceptional professionals who have performed distinguished service within the television industry for either 50 or 25 years, setting standards for achievement, mentoring, leadership, and professional accolades during that time.
Tanya Hart, Wendy Riche, Al Schwartz, and Vernée Watson are members of this year’s Gold Circle class. On the other hand, Christina Knack and Patrick Weiland are members of this year’s Silver Circle class.
Due to the ongoing strike of television writers, the 50th annual awards presentation that was supposed to be broadcast on CBS will not take place on Friday, June 16 as it was initially slated to do so. ET earlier broke this news. In addition, the Creative Arts & Lifestyle awards ceremony, which was scheduled to take place on Friday, June 16, has also been postponed and will now take place on Saturday, June 17, instead.
NATAS issued the following statement: “We look forward to our community gathering together as one to celebrate our Golden Anniversary and all of the talented nominees and honorees at a later date,”
This year, General Hospital had the most nominations with 19, followed by The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless, and Days of Our Lives with 14, 13, and 11 nominations respectively. General Hospital leads the pack with 19 nominations. The Kelly Clarkson program, a daytime chat program, has been nominated for 11 awards, and Clarkson herself has been nominated for an award in the category of Daytime chat Series Host.
In addition, Entertainment Tonight is up for two awards: one in the category of Entertainment News Series, and the other in the category of Directing for a Multiple Camera Daytime Non-Fiction Program.
The authors Guild of America went on strike on May 2, after failing to reach an agreement with major Hollywood studios on contracts affecting authors’ income, particularly in the aftermath of streaming services. The strike has already had an impact on a number of award ceremonies that were previously scheduled.
