The cast of Cheers really nailed it with the present they gave to Kirstie Alley as a way to say hello.

At the Cheers reunion that took place at the ATX TV Festival in Austin, actor George Wendt, 74, recounted the humorous incident when he and fellow cast member John Ratzenberger, 76, were entrusted with obtaining a present for the actress when she joined the show in Season 6. The event took place when the actress joined the program in Season 6.

When we were eating supper immediately before the concert, we murmured to each other, ‘Oh gosh, we should have gotten her something, huh?’ And, “Yeah, some flowers or something…'” Wendt said. “Therefore, Ted Danson responds with, ‘I can’t, I’ve got a thing I’ve had to do.’ “And Rhea Perlman’s response was ‘no.'”

He said that he and Ratzenberger had agreed to search for a present together, and in order to do so, they had chosen to drive through a highly “trendy area” in Melrose, which is located in Hollywood.

Wendt’s remark, which elicited laughter from the audience, went as follows: “… Going past all these places and we go past Big 5 Sporting Goods and John goes, ‘you wanna buy her a shotgun?'”

“And, just like you, I laughed for about five minutes,” he said. “And then immediately pulled into the parking lot, where we proceeded to purchase a freaking shotgun for her.”

He continued with a humorous remark, saying, “John and I were never tasked with the gifts again.”

According to Ratzenberger, Wendt was another person who carried the joke to an extreme.

“I think you even wrote on the card, ‘You’re going to have to shoot your way out,'” he added. “You’re gonna have to shoot your way out.”

Alley, who passed away in December at the age of 71 after a battle with illness, sprang to stardom in 1987 thanks to her role as Rebecca Howe on the successful NBC comedy. As a result of her performance in the television series that was set in Boston in 1991, she was awarded both a Golden Globe and an Emmy for best actress in the respective categories.

After it was discovered that the actress had passed away, a number of the show’s cast mates, including Kelsey Grammer, Dana, and Ron Perlman, paid homage to the departed star online.

Danson revealed this in a statement that was sent to PEOPLE. “I was on a plane today and did something that I rarely do,” he added. “I went back in time and watched an old episode of Cheers.”

“It was the episode where Tom Berenger proposes to Kirstie, who keeps saying no, even though she desperately wants to say yes,” the actor added. “It was the episode where Tom Berenger proposed to Kirstie.” “Kirstie was really amazing to see in it. Her performance as a lady on the point of a nervous breakdown was heartbreaking and hilarious all at the same time.

Grammer also revealed his feelings in a statement he sent to PEOPLE. In the statement, he said, “I always believed grief for a public figure is a private matter, but I will say I loved her.”

In a statement that was sent to PEOPLE, Perlman stated that “Kirstie was a one-of-a-kind and wonderful person and friend.” “There was no limit to her capacity for happiness. When she started working at Cheers, we almost immediately became friends with each other. My children adored her, and she was adored by them as well. We spent sleepovers at her home and she organized treasure hunts for us to participate in.

To continue, Perlman said, “She threw enormous parties for Halloween and Easter, and she invited the entire cast and crew of the show, along with their families.” She aspired for everyone to have a sense of belonging. She had a profound affection for her children. I’ve never met someone remotely like her. I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to have known her. I’m going to really, really miss having her around.”
