On a cold night in January, a man in Earlton, New York, opened his front door and was surprised to discover a visitor at his doorstep. The owner had no clue where the dog came from and it was emaciated and bald. It was shaking violently in the terrible weather.

A representative of the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA said on Facebook that “it appeared as though she had been dumped along the roadside and abandoned.”When she came to the door that night, it was probably because she was searching for food and warmth since it was a cold night.

The guy brought the dog inside and then phoned the police, who transported the canine to the shelter when they had finished their investigation. When the employees saw the dog, who they had now given the name Penny, it broke their hearts.

According to Ron Perez, who is the head of the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA, “She was in poor shape.” “She was almost bald and had many open wounds on her face and neck, both of which were covered in bandages. It was a miserable experience. It is always quite upsetting to see them in such a sorry condition.

Penny was found to be suffering from demodex mange, a terrible skin condition that is brought on when mites burrow into the skin of a dog.

According to Chris Reeder, a board-certified veterinarian at BluePearl Veterinary Hospital in Franklin, Tennessee, untreated demodex mange may be lethal. Reeder works at BluePearl Veterinary Hospital. He proceeded by saying, “In most cases, it’s more incapacitating than lethal, but in other cases, it can be fatal.”

Penny had been able to fight off the mange, but it had taken a toll on her health: she had lost the majority of her fur and was left with skin that was dry, flaky, and had become irritated and scabby.

Perez added that when she scratched it, she scraped her body, which led to more infection and blood loss.

Penny received medical treatment and a lot of loving care, and as a result, she improved in health much more quickly than anybody anticipated. “Within a week, she appeared to be a completely different dog,” Perez added further. “The veterinarian was quite pleased with her progress.”

Penny made significant progress in her recuperation as the weeks went by. Perez expressed concern that her hair would not ever fully regenerate despite the fact that her mange has been eradicated totally.

According to Perez, “She’s a true fighter and really resilient,” and you can believe him. Because she is now connecting with others, maintaining a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep, her levels of stress are noticeably much lower.

Penny was left alone while she was recovering, and the local police and the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA have been collaborating to find the person responsible for her abandonment. Within twenty-four hours, Penny’s previous owner was recognized by authorities, and he was subsequently imprisoned on charges of animal cruelty. If found guilty, the previous owner may have to pay a fee of $1,000 and serve some time in jail.

Everyone who was involved in Penny’s case is happy to hear that justice may be done, but they are even more thrilled with the couple who adopted Penny not too long ago.

In addition, Perez said that “we had a lot of applications to adopt her.” “However, these two individuals are wonderful companions for their pets. At first, they approached everything with caution and visited her once or twice every week. After everyone took their pets inside, things went from bad to better for everyone. I would like to think that this is the very last location that she will ever refer to as home.

The personnel at the shelter cannot contain their excitement as Penny’s departure for her new life is scheduled for this coming Saturday.

Perez referred to her as “simply a sweet puppy.” “There is not a single bit of meanness to be found in her whole body. She is stunning, and I think she’d be a wonderful addition to any family as a pet.
