Dogs, just like humans, each have their own distinct personalities and destinies. Berta had a wonderful character. A huge, shaggy mongrel took three elderly siblings under her wing and raised them as her own. When they arrived at the volunteer’s front door at the predetermined time, Berta gave them permission to eat before she did.

The winter was odd, with stinging frosts being followed by thaws, and even at all, freezing rain flogged passers-by. Berta was a sheepdog half-breed, judging by her color, and she had silky, curly hair and a fluffy tail. Every evening, Berta would wait for her benefactress at the entrance to the building. In their micro district, stray animals were not tolerated in any capacity. It was a common misconception that it was more responsible to throw food away in the garbage rather than feed strays.

Despite her intimidating demeanor, Berta was a really loving person who expressed a great deal of gratitude. The moment she caught sight of a female, she ran forward and made a beeline for a “hug.” She was ready for lengthy sessions of sensitive touch that may go on for hours. The volunteer intended to gradually attach the whole dog company, but there were only a few spaces available in the shelter, and everyone there was always occupied. The only thing the little girl could contribute to the cause was some nourishment and a kind touch for Berta. Even though they displayed excitement at the encounter, the elderly men, who had gained wisdom from living the difficult life of a dog, could not even get near.

Everything was different when Berta barked loudly to let the girl know she had arrived at her destination one morning. As she walked out the door carrying a plate of treats, she felt a pang of sadness well up inside of her. The dog seemed to be going through a hellish ordeal. In addition to having snowballs and ice stuck in her wet fur, she was also standing in a pool of cold water that was up to her ankles.

The young lady came to the conclusion that she could not continue to abandon the puppy in the middle of the road. She searched frantically for a means to convince Berta to enter the door through which she was always forced to exit the building. The volunteer didn’t have a collar that was appropriate for the dog, and she had no clue how to get a dog that weighed thirty kilograms to walk with her.

After Berta had finally put her concerns to rest, she continued to vigilantly observe her benefactor, as if she were holding out hope that she would soon be called to pay a visit. It was sufficient to only gesture to the door for the mutt to gleefully enter and then calmly settle down on the rug that was placed at the entrance of the apartment that was required. Berta exerted a lot of effort in order to win over the approval of the girl’s mother. She did an easy trick called “Give me a paw” perfectly. The dog wanted love as a kind of reward and would close his eyes in contentment whenever his owner rubbed him behind the ears.

This time, Berta was so worn out from the warmth and caress that she didn’t even bother to reach for the bowls. After being cleaned up from the snow and mud, she was invited to relax on a couch that was covered in plaid. The dog eventually passed out from exhaustion and contentment as he cuddled up with the very first toy he had ever had.
