Billy Gardell was born on August 20, 1969 in Swissvale, Pennsylvania. He has said that he has always had a passion for humor ever since he was a little child. When he was in his 20s, he began his career as a stand-up comedian and rapidly garnered a following in the Pittsburgh comedy scene.
Gardell got his big break when he was hired in the role of Billy Colavita in the television series “Lucky.” Despite the fact that the program was cancelled after just one season, it provided Gardell with the opportunity to pursue other endeavors. After that, he went on to make guest appearances in a number of other television programs, some of which include “The King of Queens,” “Desperate Housewives,” and “Yes, Dear.”
In the year 2010, Gardell was cast as Mike Biggs on the popular CBS comedy “Mike & Molly.” The sitcom, which also featured Melissa McCarthy, chronicled the lives of two obese individuals who fell in love after meeting at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting. In 2011, Gardell was recognized with a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance as Mike Biggs. Before it was cancelled in 2016, the program had aired for a total of six seasons.

Gardell is well known for his work on television, but he has also made appearances in a number of films, such as “You, Me and Dupree,” “Avenging Angelo,” and “Jersey Boys.” In addition to that, he has published a number of comedy CDs, some of which are titled “Billy Gardell: Halftime” and “Billy Gardell Presents Road Dogs.”
Gardell is well-known for having a warm, welcoming attitude and a sense of humor that is easily accessible. He often finds motivation in his own life experiences, such as his battles with his weight and his background in a working-class household.
The actor went public in September 2022 about his tremendous weight reduction, which not only resulted in a reversal of his diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes but also resulted in a decrease of around 150 pounds of weight overall. Continue reading to see how Gardell managed to pull off such an incredible change, as well as how his path toward better health is progressing.
Since the beginning of his acting career, Gardell has been mostly recognized for portraying the comedic roles often associated with being overweight. When the epidemic struck in the year 2020, however, everything changed. The difficult time acted as a wake-up call for Gardell, who got disheartening news about his worsening health condition during the trying times.

According to an interview he gave to Entertainment Tonight in September 2022, he said that “at first I developed Type 2 diabetes, and then I went on a medication for that for about a year and start taking better care of myself.” “I’ve managed to shed roughly 30 pounds. However, then COVID struck. And when they punched up all the markers that labeled you ‘at risk,’ I had all of them except for the one that said ‘above 65.’ I had a complete bingo card.”
It was at that time that Gardell made the decision to go forward with the bariatric surgery that he had been considering.
“And after that, I just altered everything that I had been doing. I want to make it quite clear that the decision to have surgery was all mine. No one should follow my advice to do it. That was the thing that I needed to accomplish for myself, but it’s just a tool overall. He went on to say that “people get this big again,” which is evidence that “the real battle is still in (the mind).”
The star of “Bob Hearts Abishola” later disclosed that he has reduced his weight by more than 150 pounds.
“I’m fighting at middleweight these days, and I’ve dropped down to 212!” Gardell, who claims that he weighed more than 370 pounds around ten years ago, claimed.
He went on to say that in spite of the success, he was not going to take his eyes off the ball any time soon.
“You have a small window of opportunity to change the way you live, the way you eat, and the way you exercise, and so far I’ve been able to take advantage of it,” she said. I tackle it one day at a time, and I can’t express how glad I am that things turned out this way for me. The man, who was 53 years old, noted that he would no longer have to deal with diabetes or poor blood numbers.
In April of 2023, Gardell provided an update on his health struggle on the television show Entertainment Tonight.
“My weight fluctuates between 205 and 210 pounds (as a whole). It’s vital to take care of yourself, and I believe I’ve reached that point now,” he remarked.
In addition to this, Gardell said that he is no longer affected by Type 2 diabetes and that his resting heart rate has decreased from 113 to 68. Gardell said that, despite his remarkable accomplishments, he continues to face criticism over his physical appearance from strangers.
“These days I’m walking around feeling fairly healthy. Of course, there are always going to be people online who, you know, when I was fat, they were like, ‘You’re too heavy!’ And now people are asking me, ‘Are you sick?’ Please let me go anywhere on the planet! Gardell implored.
Gardell noted that his wife and kid have been a significant source of motivation for him.
“My body feels better, my joints feel better, and I’m trying to stay around and annoy my wife for another 20 years,” claimed Gardell. “I’m trying to stay around and annoy my wife for another 20 years.” When it came to his son, he made the following statement:

“When you approach 50, you start doing that dad arithmetic, like, ‘If I can live 25 more years, and he’ll be 40,’… I feel as if I wasn’t a good example of maintaining a healthy lifestyle for him. Because of this, I want him to understand that. You can make whatever kind of change you want in your life as long as you are prepared to take things one day at a time, regardless of how old you are.
Gardell said that it is enjoyable to be able to “shop at a normal store” and that she no longer has to “take a deep breath when I tie my shoes,” but she also mentioned that some parts of living a smaller life have not worked out as well.
“There is too much pressure on the ankles. I’m not interested in doing yoga to loosen myself so I can get out of my jeans. Gardell laughed at it and said, “That’s where I miss my fat boy pants because you could drop them and step out like a fireman.”
