When Carolyn and Andrew Clark of Michigan welcomed their second child, a baby girl they named Audrey, in March, they were overjoyed. This marked the end of a string of 138 years during which the Clark family had only produced males.

When Carolyn initially learned that her husband’s family had not had a daughter born on their side of the family since 1885, she said on Good Morning America that the news left her speechless.

She remembers asking Andrew, whom she had been seeing for over a decade at the time, “What do you mean?” after he said that “it’s a 50-50 possibility” with each new kid born. She was confused by his response. ” He responds by saying, “No, in all honesty, our family tree has not been passed down by a female for well over a century.”

Carolyn reported to GMA that the unexpected data was validated by Andrew’s mother and father. “They respond with something to the effect of, “Oh yes, no, we haven’t had a female in our direct line.” Even if he has aunts and relatives who have given birth to daughters, there has never been a girl in his direct line of ancestry.”

When the couple decided to start trying for another child, they already had a boy, Cameron, who was 4 years old at the time, and they were hoping for a girl, Carolyn said during an interview with WZZM 13.

Carolyn suffered from two miscarriages before the couple found out that she was pregnant again. She shared with GMA that at that moment, her partner and “honestly didn’t care” whether they were expecting a boy or a girl. “We simply wanted to express our gratitude for the opportunity to get pregnant and to pray for a safe pregnancy and a healthy child.”

Everyone at the Clarks’ September celebration, including the Clarks’ family and friends, found out together that they were going to have a girl when they were given special cookies that had been cooked with either pink or blue icing. The Clarks are expecting a daughter.

Andrew shared his thoughts with GMA, saying, “We kept it a secret even from ourselves.” Hence, I basically made the assumption that the color in the middle of the cookies would be blue.

After a countdown, Andrew, Carolyn, and their guests all took a bite of the cookies at the same moment, at which point they discovered that the cookies were pink on the inside. Carolyn described the scene to WZZM 13 by saying that “everyone was just shouting and jumping in shock.”

Andrew shared with the media source that it was “very hard to come up with a name” due to the fact that “we’ve never thought about a female name before.”

Carolyn said that the arrival of the couple’s daughter Audrey on March 17, which is also known as St. Patrick’s Day, brought “simple pleasure” to the family. She went on to say that the birth was “even more special” since their daughter was “worth the wait and all the challenges.”

Carolyn said to GMA that the change of events was “icing on the cake” in regard to the Clark family finally having a girl after 138 years of only having sons.

Carolyn continued by saying, “Once again, we’re relieved that she’s healthy and that the birth itself went well.” “We’re very glad that she’s finally here, and once again, that everything went well with the delivery.”
