Authorities in Idaho claim that a man was able to kill the primary suspect in the slaying of his mother before he could be apprehended by law enforcement, which resulted in the man being arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

According to the records of the Ada County Jail and a press release issued by the Ada County Sheriff’s Office, Raul A. Cuevas, 31, of Nampa, is being held in connection with the fatal stabbing of Jesus Urrutia, 39, also of Nampa. Cuevas is being held in lieu of no bail. Urrutia was also from Nampa.

An investigation was initiated on March 28 at around 8:30 p.m., when police officers were summoned to a home in Nampa, where they found Cueva’s mother, Michella Luna, 52, with “multiple stab wounds,” according to a post on Facebook from the Nampa Police Department. It was determined that she had passed away at the site.

According to the investigators, Urrutia was soon identified as a suspect in the slaying of the woman, and they spent the night attempting to locate him. According to the statement, the police claimed that the suspect “was known to the victim,” but they did not immediately give any specifics about his alleged role in the crime.

According to a press release, the sheriff’s office received a call about a stabbing that took place in the parking lot of a gas station in Avimor around 7 a.m. on March 29. Avimor is located more than 25 miles away from Nampa.

Authorities stated that upon arrival, deputies discovered a man who was later identified as Urruita “slumped over” in a parked vehicle with the engine still running. They also stated that the man had a stab wound on his body.

Urrutia succumbed to his wounds and passed sometime later. According to the sheriff’s office, which cited the findings of the county coroner’s office, the cause of his death was a “sharp force injury wound to the chest,” and it was determined to be a homicide.

According to the statement, while this was going on, the police recognized Cuevas as a person of interest in the slaying of Urrutia and found him sitting in a vehicle at the intersection of Idaho 55 and Beacon Light Road.

According to the press release, deputies conducted interviews with Cuevas and gathered evidence before transporting him to the Ada County Prison, where he was charged with first-degree murder.

The manager of the gas station where Urrutia was discovered told the Idaho Statesman that Cuevas allegedly used the phone at the station to call the police and surrender himself. Urrutia was found there.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established by a woman who has been identified as Luna’s daughter in order to assist in covering the costs of the funeral.

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office stated that the case is still under investigation and that they have not provided any information regarding a possible motive for the violence. They did note, however, that detectives and deputies are following “several different leads.”
