She was the only woman in the cast of that program, which otherwise consisted entirely of men, but because she was the recipient of more fan mail than any of the other regulars, the producers understood they needed to find a way to include Kate into the plot of the show. Jack Condon, who co-wrote “The Charlie’s Angels Casebook,” said that the show went through a number of distinct stages.”
Condon said, “The original working title of the program was supposed to be “The Alley Cats,” which was a sort of acronym for the names of the three female protagonists, Allie, Lee, and Katherine. At the time, they were supposed to be characters in the vein of Emma Peel, where they would be karate-chopping, leather-clad women combating crime. It’s interesting to note that while they were working on the initial concept, they actually approached Ernest Tidyman, the author of “The French Connection,” with the idea of having him write the screenplay. But whatever he generated wasn’t exactly what Spelling and Goldberg wanted, so they turned to Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts, who’d just had a stint on “Mannix” with Mike Connors. Ben Roberts and Ivan Goff had just finished a run on the show. They also conferred with Kate Jackson when writing the screenplay.”
It turned out that Jackson was a perfect fit for the character of a crime fighter with plenty of action on “Charlie’s Angels,” which was precisely what the producers were looking for. Initially, she was going to play Kelly Garrett, but she ultimately decided that Sabrina Duncan was a better fit for her.

He went on to say, “It was more so the moment for Kate than it was for ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and the empowerment of women that the program brought about. It was only a coincidence that she appeared in the same scene as these other two captivating ladies. However, she wasn’t intended to have a show. Because it was constructed around her, she served as the organization’s vital glue and was responsible for first drawing others in.”

Jackson’s friendships with her co-stars on “Charlie’s Angels” are one of the show’s many positive legacies. The actress gained lifelong friends and allies in Jaclyn Smith and Farrah Fawcett, and they were there for her anytime she needed their assistance. Jackson did her first interview in years in 2019 to pay respect to her friend Fawcett, who had gone away in 2019, ten years after Fawcett’s death. As a result of the forty-year career it afforded me, I have nothing except pleasant recollections.”
In 1987, Jackson received the devastating news that she had breast cancer. The diagnosis was unexpected. In an interview that she gave in 1992 to People magazine, Jackson said, “I was forced to confront, squared up, my own death.” “It was up to me to determine whether or not I wanted to continue living. And if you choose life, as I did, you’ll find that things change constantly.”
It was the very first mammography that the actress had ever had done, and it was the one that found the tumor. She responded with, “I have no idea why.” “I assume that, like a lot of other women, I had disregarded it,” she said.
She went on to clarify that it wasn’t a lump at all. “Even though I tried to feel it, there was nothing there. It was on the tiny scale.”
Unfortunately, at Jackson’s follow-up session, the doctors discovered more malignant cells; as a result, they determined that he would need yet another operation. The actress said that it was obvious that they had missed a little bit in the past.
When it came time for Jackson to have her surgery done, she drew on the inner strength she had developed together with the support of her close friends. She recalls thinking to herself, “The spectrum of emotions you go through is remarkable.” “On the other hand, I decided to consciously choose to have a good attitude. I forced myself to ignore any unfavorable thoughts that entered my head.”
Smith was one of the first persons Jackson attempted to contact once he became president. According to what Smith said to People, “I’d been weeping before I got there.” “Then I looked over and saw Kate, who was beaming from ear to ear. Jackson shared his reflections on the event, stating, “At first I thought, ‘Oh, God, my life is so serious,’ but then I’d look at this monkey and had to chuckle.”
Jackson was able to experience a sense of relief as she regained consciousness following her operation. In her words: “The first thing I heard was some encouraging information. Thankfully, all of my lymph nodes came back negative. I am very aware of how blessed I am.”
Since then, Jackson has continued to carry that upbeat attitude with him. Smith was quoted as saying of her buddy, “Kate is one of the lucky ones. The fact that she hasn’t become cynical is one of the things I appreciate most about her.”
Jackson made the decision to go to a macrobiotic diet as soon as she found out the wonderful news, which helped her come to terms with the outcomes of the reconstructive surgery she would eventually choose to have. She spoke the following phrase: “I’m never going to have the ideal physique.” “Facelifts and lip fillers are not my thing at all. I am able to dress appropriately for any role, whether it calls for a bustier, a strapless evening gown, or anything else.”

After recovering from her sickness, Jackson spent some time reconnecting with her family and ancestors, but she eventually moved on.
After some time, she married her now-ex-husband, Tom Hart, who is the proprietor of a ski resort in Utah. This ultimately led to her relocation to that state. In 1989, Jackson was on vacation in Aspen, Colorado, and that’s when he and Janet first crossed paths. They got to know one other when Jackson passed a message on to Hart via the waiter at the restaurant where they were both eating at the same time. The actress said that, “It stated that I will be in town for one whole week. If you are interested, feel free to give me a call.’ I had never previously written somebody a letter of any kind. It was probably related to the fact that I was able to overcome my health issues. You have come to the conclusion that if you want things to occur in your life, it is up to you to initiate the process.”
Their wedding took place in 1991, after which Jackson assumed the role of stepmother to Hart’s kids. They parted ways in 1993, which was a sad turn of events.
Before she met Hart, Jackson had been married twice before. Both of those marriages ended in divorce.
