On Tuesday, Deadline reported that the Euphoria star, 25, is set to star in and executive produce a new Barbarella movie for Sony Pictures, which she is also working with on the Spider-Man spinoff Madame Webb.
Sweeney shared the Deadline report and an illustrated poster from the 1968 film’s original version, which featured Jane Fonda in the lead role, in an Instagram post on Tuesday to confirm the news.
“Time to save the universe,” Sweeney wrote in the caption.
According to Deadline, the movie is based on a French comic book series written and illustrated by Jean-Claude Forest that was later turned into a motion picture. According to a plot summary on IMDB and Deadline, the 1968 Roger Vadim-directed movie centers on an astronaut “from the 41st century” who has to stop an evil scientist named Durand Durand from utilizing a weapon called the Positronic Ray.
According to Deadline, the first modern attempts to recreate Barbarella took place in 2013, when famous James Bond writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade were hired to develop a television version for Gaumont International Television.
The Hollywood Reporter quoted Sweeney as saying in July that she couldn’t afford to take a “six-month break” from acting. The White Lotus actor said that “they don’t compensate actors like they used to, and with streamers, you no longer receive residuals.”
“The established stars continue to get payment, but I have to contribute 5% to my attorney, 10% to my agents, and 3% or so to my business manager. Every month, I must pay my PR, “She spoke.
Sweeney said that as a consequence, she won’t be able to take a long professional hiatus any time soon.
The Emmy contender said, “If I wanted to take a six-month hiatus, I don’t have revenue to do it. “I don’t have anybody helping me, I don’t have anyone I can contact for aid or to pay my expenses to.”
