Couple Who Lost Arms in Tornado Reunites in Hospital
Two weeks ago, Paul and Gail Cline’s lives changed in an instant.
The couple, both in their 60s, were holding each other when a deadly tornado ripped through Kentucky, costing each of them an arm. Their extraordinary story of survival and enduring love has touched people across the country.
### A Devastating Storm
On May 16, a violent EF-4 tornado with winds surpassing 170 mph tore through Russell, Pulaski, and Laurel counties in Kentucky, leaving a path of destruction over 55 miles long. By May 18, at least 27 people had been confirmed dead.
Among the survivors were Paul and Gail Cline. As the tornado destroyed their home, the couple clung to one another—ultimately each losing an arm. Critically injured, they were rushed to the hospital, their connection unbroken even through unimaginable pain.
### A Heartwarming Update
Now, there’s a deeply emotional update bringing hope to many.
After 30 years of marriage, Paul and Gail have been reunited in the hospital. Despite everything they’ve endured, they managed to smile through the pain when they saw each other again.
Gail had been on a ventilator for several days but was finally able to breathe on her own last Thursday. Her first words after coming off the machine were simple and powerful: “I love you,” according to her niece, Brandy Bowman.
“It was so emotional — in the best way,” said another niece, Taylor Baker. “Seeing them together again, her smiling at him… it was beautiful.”
A Long Road Ahead
While the reunion brought joy, recovery remains uncertain and difficult.
“There’s progress, but it’s one step forward and three steps back,” said their son, Jeff Cline. “They’re not out of the woods yet. It’s going to be a long journey before they can come home.”
Jeff also praised the many people who helped save his parents — from neighbors to emergency responders to hospital staff. “These are the real heroes,” he said. “The ones wearing actual capes.”
Paul is expected to be transferred to a rehabilitation center soon for continued treatment, including tests to monitor for internal damage. Both he and Gail remain hospitalized as they face the next phase of their healing process.
A Nation Inspired
Despite their severe injuries and the loss of their home, Paul and Gail Cline are a testament to love, strength, and resilience. Their reunion serves as a beacon of hope, proving that even in the darkest times, the human spirit can persevere.
Supporters can follow their journey or donate to their recovery through their GoFundMe page, which has already raised over \$103,595.
