Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are still murdering after more than two decades of marriage!
On Sunday, Sept. 1, the ‘90s and 2000s pop culture icons — who met thanks to I Know What You Did Last Summer and wed in 2002 — celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary with a lowkey Instagram post.
Alongside a smiley and cuddly photo of the couple — in which Prinze, 48, wraps his arms around Gellar’s waist — the Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum, 47, penned a simple caption.
“22 @realfreddieprinze,” Gellar wrote, aGellar and Prinze first crossed paths on the set of their 1997 slasher film — but it wasn’t love at first sight. While chatting with PEOPLE back in 2001, the She’s All That actor admitted that he and Gellar “really didn’t dig each other” at first.
But things changed once the actors got to know each other more. “One day I gave her a ride to the gym,” Prinze said at the time. “We talked on the way up, and she was a cool chick.”

The first time Gellar and Prinze came into contact with one another was on the set of their slasher film from 1997; however, it was not love at first sight. During an interview with People magazine in the year 2001, the actor who played She’s All That confessed that he and Gellar “really didn’t dig each other” immediately after meeting.
But things changed after the performers got to know one other further. “One day I gave her a ride to the gym,” Prinze claimed at the time. “We talked on the way up, and she was a cool chick.”
The two individuals first had a friendship that was purely platonic, but it eventually developed into something more. “We were friends for a good two years before we went on a date. Prinze Jr. had earlier said to E! News that she was aware of the sort of man that he was. She was aware of my value system, my priorities, and vice versa. She was also aware of my morals.
“We already kind of knew all the faults in the other person,” he added.
In addition, Gellar disclosed to PEOPLE Now in the year 2020 that their first date together was really something of a coincidence. “For a very long time, we were friends with each other. We’d had many dinners before. And we were supposed to go with someone else, and the third person didn’t make it out, and we decided to still go,” the star recalled.
She continued by saying, “We were just two people hanging out at dinner catching up.” “We had a long car ride and a long dinner and things just happened.”
And after their first date, Prinze said that he knew Gellar was the one. “I didn’t go on dates with other girls,” he added, “nor did I even want to seek dates with other girls.”

The couple — who have two children, daughter Charlotte, 14, and son Rocky, 11 – appeared on television together many times following I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Gellar had a minor appearance in 1999’s She’s All That and, perhaps most famously, the two brought Fred Jones and Daphne Blake to life in James Gunn’s campy Scooby-Doo features in 2002 and 2004.
In the year 2022, as the couple was celebrating their twentieth wedding anniversary, they took a trip down memory lane by sharing photographs of their wedding. In addition, they criticized Howard Stern for his prediction that their marriage would not endure.
Stern, who was 70 years old at the time, posed the following question to Prinze before the couple tied the knot in 2002: “So you’re going to marry Sarah Michelle Gellar, even though you know it won’t last?” in response to which the actor said, “Oh, without a doubt, it will endure.”
A screen capture of the event was published by Gellar, who also tagged Stern and remarked, “I think you owe us.” Gellar was enjoying the passage of twenty years.
Plus, Prinze piled on to Gellar’s post, “She will not forget.”
