For a fresh rETrospective, the actress opened up to ET about her work and her bond with the ‘Toxic’ singer. The interview was conducted by ET.
Taking Britney Spears to her very first club was not the finest way to be a sister and a role model to the pop queen, according to Melissa Joan Hart, who claims that she feels that she could have done something differently.
The actress, who is 48 years old, recently gave an interview to Entertainment Tonight (ET) in which she discussed her career that spans a decade, her most iconic projects, such as Clarissa Explains It All and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, as well as her friendship with Spears, who is 42 years old. The friendship began when the actress appeared alongside Spears in the music video for “You Drive Me (Crazy).”
There was a lot of publicity that Britney and I were able to do together. “And we had a lot of fun together during this time,” Hart said as she reflected on the videos and photographs that she had taken of herself and the singer from 1999 and beyond. Despite the fact that she is six years older than Spears, the actress had a connection with the adolescent that was similar to that of a brother.
The only thing I could see was that she was encircled by people and was unable to escape at any point. To which I said, “Hey, would you like to come?” Hart related the story of how he was able to convince the GRAMMY Award winner to leave her comfort zone and go out to a nightclub with her pals. “I would go to a club every night — I love dancing and I loved going out, but I also knew to be responsible and, like, when to stop.”

The “Womanizer” vocalist was just 17 years old when the song and the very successful music video in which she starred were made available to the public. The song was taken from Spears’s first studio album, titled Baby One More Time, which was released about a few months before to her 18th birthday.
The video, which has had more than 206 million views on Spears’ YouTube page, also includes Adrian Grenier, who was a heartthrob in the late 1990s and starred in The Devil Wears Prada. The film follows Spears and Hart as they play dress up with their pals before drinking and dancing in a setting that resembles a warehouse. Both the song and the music video were released in conjunction with the film Drive Me Crazy, which was directed by Hart and Grenier and was released around the same time as Spears’ album.
Although she was young and didn’t know any better at the time, Hart adds that it is something that she continues to worry about “to this day” since she believes that hindsight is 20/20. The singer who is well known for her hit song “Oops!… I Did It Again” subsequently had a difficult time with partying in the early 2000s. However, she has also described in her biography, The Woman in Me, about drinking with her mother when she was young.
“I was simply like, ‘Let’s go out.’ She was underage and young, but I believed that we should go out. To put it simply, we are going to go out and have some fun. To answer your question, “And yeah — and I feel really guilty about that even to this day because I should have known better, being a big sister,” Hart said in an interview with ET.
Spears would find herself in a very contentious conservatorship with her father, Jamie Spears, less than a decade after she first went out with Hart to a club. Jamie Spears “temporarily” took over management of the family business while she allegedly suffered with mental health concerns. Fans are well aware of this fact. The conservatorship was eventually deemed permanent by a court in Los Angeles, which granted Jamie, who is 71 years old, and another co-conservator the authority to make decisions about her financial and medical care.
Spears was granted the freedom to control her career, finances, and major life decisions once the conservatorship was terminated in November 2021, after thirteen years and a passionate #FreeBritney movement. This included the ability to get married or have a baby, both of which she testified in September 2021 that she was not permitted to do while she was under the conservatorship.
Hart reveals to Entertainment Tonight that she has not been in continuous communication with the singer and Crossroads actress, but that she did get the opportunity to meet her during the time that Spears was playing in her residency in Las Vegas, which was called Britney: Piece of Me.
“I saw her when she was doing her Vegas residency a few years back, but she was doing her show so, you know, it was a quick hello backstage and that was it,” Hart said in an interview with ET about their most recent meeting.
She believes that Britney’s problems and life narrative have left an indelible mark on her, including the choice to sign onboard her new Lifetime film, The Bad Guardian. The Melissa & Joey actress, on the other hand, thinks that her life story influences her forever. In the next movie, Hart will play the role of Leigh, a lady who is frantically attempting to save her father from a guardianship situation that is poisonous.
“When Leigh’s (Hart) father Jason (Eric Pierpoint) sustains a fall while she is out from town, the courts appoint Janet (La La Anthony) as Jason’s guardian assuming responsibility for his care. The situation swiftly takes a catastrophic turn, despite the fact that at first it seems like Janet is a great aid to Jason. “Janet is legally responsible for every aspect of Jason’s life, and she does not waste any time in her decision to place him in a nursing home, auction off his house and all of his worldly possessions, and use the excuse that the proceeds are needed for his care,” states a synopsis of the film.
Keeping the conversation continuing about the challenging subject matter, Hart says she was moved to share the important tale in part because of Spears and Wendy Williams, who is presently under guardianship. She also wanted to keep the conversation going about the tough issue.
You may say that it encompasses a wide variety of distinct narratives. The situation is not unique to any one individual; rather, it is occurring all throughout the United States, where individuals are losing members of their families due to guardianships. These guardianships are permanent and are established by courts in order to safeguard the individual, who is often an elderly person.
“I mean, we are all aware of the fact that someone like Britney or Wendy Williams has guardianships that are, you know, generating trouble. In addition, she went on to say that in many instances, it is families who suffer the loss of a senior member of their family, highlighting how challenging and expensive the circumstances may be in real life.
Hart proceeded by stating that there is a great deal of dishonesty in the guardianship industry, despite the fact that there are guardianships that are both essential and advantageous for a person who is in need. Rosamund Pike, who was born in Saltburn, was awarded a Golden Globe for her performance in the film I Care A Lot, which was released on Netflix in 2021. In the film, Pike played the role of a court-appointed guardian who was both dedicated and nasty.
“Once the physicians and the courts have determined that this individual need assistance, a guardian is appointed, and the majority of the time, it is not a member of the individual’s family. It is a corporation that is worth $2.9 billion,” said Hart. On the other hand, despite the fact that the majority of them are legitimate guardianships for persons who need them, there is a great deal of corruption. As a result, we are basically bringing attention to the corrupt nature of this film.
She told the news outlet, “I’m really proud of it.. think it’s a captivating movie and I’m — I’m really happy that we could get the story out.”
