Every year, the holiday season is one of the most anticipated festivities. This is due to the fact that, in addition to the act of exchanging gifts and building memories with family and friends, it is also the time of year when you are able to consume everything you want since, in most cases, someone prepares an excess of food that is so plentiful that it is overflowing.
On the other hand, a lady called Caroline Duddridge, who was 64 years old in the year 2023, has a totally different perspective on the yearly Christmas dinner. She insists that her family, including the younger members of the family, pay her money for their meal.
She disclosed this information in an interview with The Sun that was published in November 2023. In the interview, Duddridge said that she had resigned from teaching many years earlier, but that she had later returned to school and unretired since it was the only way for her to sustain the spiraling cost of living.
According to what she claimed, “I am a grey rinse grafter who is now back at work in order to pay the bills.”
As a result of the fact that she was receiving a widow’s pension after the death of her husband in 2015 due to cancer, she realized that it was insufficient and that she needed to make more money. As a result, she made the decision to return to school in order to work as a substitute teaching assistant in order to “survive.”
It is not only me who is unable to afford to retire; there are many others. I have a lot of pals that are the same way. “I am a pensioner who is looking for work,” she continued and said.
During that time period, she was also responsible for taking care of her elderly mother in addition to her employment.
She was 64 years old at the time, and working with younger children at elementary schools in the area was difficult for her since she needed to be physically there in order to speak with youngsters more effectively. Being on the ground was essential.
“Even though it’s a lot of effort, I really adore it… My knees and back have seen better days, but with the reception and year one kids, you have to be up and down all the time,” she said. “It’s a constant up and down routine.”
In a second interview, Duddridge said that due to the persistent increase in costs, she even charges her family for their Christmas meal. This includes her grandkids, who were quite little at the time.
Her older children, who are mostly in their 30s, are required to pay her £15 (about $18.82 USD), whilst her younger children, who include a 12-year-old and three nine-year-olds, are charged £5 ($6.27 USD). Last but not least, the two children who are the youngest, who are three years old, will eat for a total of $2.50 ($3.14 USD).
During the month of November, the lady said that she would check her bank account to see who had already paid. Once she had compiled the “naughty and nice” list, she would then phone her children to remind those who had not yet deposited the money. The deadline for this is on the first day of December each year.

According to Duddridge, she is quite particular about payments because she does not let her children to transfer the money at a later date. She does this because she is afraid that she would invite them to the Christmas feast without their permission.
The statement that she made was, “I am aware that many people will criticize charging for the Christmas meal, but I am not bothered by it.”
Because it is possible that the temperature would drop over the Christmas season, she will charge her family for the power in addition to the food. This is because they will need to use the heater at this time of year.
Putting a tax on meals for children may seem cruel to some people, but it is a valuable lesson that should be learned throughout one’s life. It is something that I like that the older grandchildren are willing to offer to assist me in recouping part of the money that they have given me,” she said.
