Richard Istel’s 2014 audition on The Voice Kids Germany remains one of the show’s most unforgettable performances, attracting more than 52 million views on YouTube. Even years later, the audition continues to stand out as a remarkable demonstration of how a powerful voice alone can capture an audience.

What made the performance especially unique was the “curtain twist.” Richard sang from behind a huge white curtain, keeping his identity hidden from both the judges and the audience. The focus was entirely on his vocals. Only after all three coaches had turned their chairs did the curtain finally drop, revealing that the impressive voice belonged to a 14-year-old boy.

Lena Meyer-Landrut, Henning Wehland, and Johannes Strate were visibly surprised by Richard’s vocal control, accuracy, and emotional delivery. After receiving attention from all three coaches, Richard ultimately chose to join Lena’s team.

His journey continued to impress throughout the competition. In the Battles, he performed John Legend’s “All of Me,” followed by “Stay” during the Sing-Offs. For the final, Richard took on “Skyscraper” by Demi Lovato and “Pompeii” by Bastille, eventually finishing as the runner-up of the second season.

Richard’s passion for music continued long after The Voice Kids. In 2023, he released the single “Gave Up” along with a new EP, showing that his musical journey was far from over. At the same time, he pursued a career in aviation and became a flight attendant with Lufthansa, combining his professional career with his passion for music.
