Ian Somerhalder has revealed that he and his wife, Nikki Reed, went through serious financial difficulties after stepping away from acting, ultimately selling off a wide range of personal assets to recover from what he described as an eight-figure debt.
The Vampire Diaries actor, 47, said he retired from acting in 2019 after an “extremely profitable” television career, but faced financial turmoil tied to business ventures that weren’t properly structured. He also claimed that fraud played a role in leaving the couple deeply in debt—something he estimated as a loss in the tens of millions.
According to Somerhalder, he and Reed managed to work their way out of the situation together, crediting her for helping negotiate and resolve key aspects of the financial mess. To rebuild their finances, the couple sold “houses, artwork, cars, watches—everything,” he shared in an interview.
He reflected that, given his success on The Vampire Diaries, he expected to retire comfortably, but instead had to face an unexpected setback after leaving the show and later ending his involvement in V Wars. He has since said he doesn’t plan to return to acting, explaining that his focus has shifted toward business, family life, and long-term sustainability projects.
Both Somerhalder and Reed have since pivoted into entrepreneurship, co-founding ventures such as The Absorption Company, a wellness supplement brand, while also pursuing separate business projects in sustainable fashion, beverages, and eco-friendly consumer goods. Reed has emphasized that their career shift isn’t an abandonment of entertainment but a transition toward integrating their public influence with purpose-driven business work.
The couple, who have two children together, continue to balance parenting with multiple business ventures centered on sustainability and health.
