Actor Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was discovered deceased by a friend who had been caring for him, according to newly released details from authorities.

Putnam County Coroner Todd Zeiner confirmed that the 54-year-old actor was found dead on March 20. He appeared to be peacefully at rest, “positioned as if asleep.” A close friend, who had been staying overnight to assist him, made the discovery. Officials noted that the time of death seemed very recent, and investigators are reviewing recently posted videos as part of their examination into his health prior to passing.

The identity of the friend has not been made public.

According to Zeiner, Brendon had a known history of heart-related issues. Authorities found no evidence of foul play, and nothing at the scene suggested anything other than a natural death.

An autopsy has been conducted, though toxicology results and final conclusions are still pending. The official cause and manner of death will be announced once all findings are complete.

Brendon’s family confirmed his passing in an Instagram statement on March 20, sharing that he died peacefully in his sleep from natural causes.

They described him as a deeply passionate and sensitive individual with a strong creative drive. While acknowledging his past struggles, they noted that he had been undergoing treatment and felt hopeful about the future. The family also asked for privacy as they mourn his loss and celebrate his life.

Brendon rose to fame for portraying Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which aired from 1997 to 2003. His co-stars, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, and David Boreanaz, paid tribute to him following the news.

Gellar shared a heartfelt message, quoting a line from his character and reflecting on his experience, before adding a personal farewell. Hannigan and Boreanaz also expressed their grief.

Beyond Buffy, Brendon appeared in films such as Psycho Beach Party, Unholy, and Coherence, and had roles in television series including Kitchen Confidential and Criminal Minds, where he played Kevin Lynch.
